Program Research
A partnership of Foundation Boroondara, the Rotary Club of Hawthorn and Camcare commissioned Dr Janet Stanley from the Brotherhood of St Laurence to investigate the issues of Social Exclusion in Boroondara. The Stage 1 report was released in 2004 and one of the significant recommendation was to do further research into the experience of social exclusion in Boroondara. The findings of the Stage 2 report were presented at a Forum of community leaders on 3rd April 2007. The April forum brought together leaders of all backgrounds (including business, service organisations, Government and non Government agencies and schools) to consider how we as a community can develop and implement strategies to change the circumstances of children who experience social exclusion. We are pleased to present Dr Stanley's full report of Social Exclusion in Boroondara (see attachment). Kinder +, seeking to address barriers to kindergarten attendance by Denise Whitelaw Foundation Boroondara together with the Rotary Clubs of Hawthorn and Balwyn undertook a project to identify the barriers to kindergarten participation in Boroondara. The report Kinder + was launched at AGM of Foundation Boroondara on 5 December 2007. In launching the report Meredith Carter, CEO Kindergarten Parents Victoria (KPV) stated ….“ and the initiative of Foundation Boroondara will mean children who will most benefit from a quality early childhood education can leap over at least some of the barriers in their way, making a difference not just for them, but for all of us.” This report found there is a need to assist disadvantaged families in Boroondara with both financial & social supports.
